Through the merging of past and present, students in this course study classical and contemporary texts and examine the lasting influence of each text. Students acquire a foundational understanding of the reading, writing, language skills including grammar and vocabulary, speaking and listening skills necessary for success in college, career, and beyond. Students become critical readers and thinkers as they delve into rigorous and engaging literary and informational texts by examining the rhetoric and purpose of the texts through close readings, interactive practice and formal assessments. They also learn to write effective narrative, informational, and argumentative pieces through repeated practice in planning, drafting, revising and editing their writing.
Math might seem abstract, but it’s everywhere in everyday life. This course is designed to show you how math is used in real-world situations. With fun activities and interactive lessons, students get to experience and practice how these concepts apply to real life. The major topics of this course include performing operations with rational numbers, solving equations and inequalities, and applying proportional relationships involving two variables. They also learn to analyze circles and cylinders, compare categorical and numerical data, and develop an understanding of probability.

Middle School Comprehensive Science I is the first in a series of three consecutive science classes that build upon each other. It introduces middle school students to the disciplines of life science, physical science, and Earth and space science. In addition, the technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts are integrated throughout the course curriculum. The lessons make real-world connections and require students to apply STEM skills such as analysis, problem solving, scientific knowledge, and engineering practices. Hands-on laboratory investigations are included throughout the course to provide students with opportunities for exploration through various methods such as scientific inquiry, research, measurement, problem solving and experimental procedures. By the end of the course, students will be practicing, experimenting, thinking and talking like scientists.

From the ancient river civilizations to China and its ancient dynasties, different civilizations left their mark on history. They also left their mark on how we live today. In this course, students join Mr. Lightfoot, a travel agent, to travel back in time, exploring the past of these ancient civilizations. In ancient Egypt, students visit the pyramids and discover the secrets behind the preservation of mummies. They see how the Mayans developed astronomy into a precise science. They even investigate the differences in culture between the Athenians and the Spartans. Students journey through India, discovering the contributions of ancient Indian civilizations to medicine, before moving on to Africa to follow the rise and fall of ancient Eastern civilizations. The African kingdoms of Kush and Axum played significant roles in history. Throughout the centuries and continuing to this day, our world is made up of dozens of different cultures. They are all different, and they all have made major contributions to our knowledge and identity.

Middle School Comprehensive Science II is a comprehensive science course including the disciplines of life science, physical science, and Earth and space science in addition to technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts.The course is designed for middle school students. The lessons provide real-world connections through the application of STEM problem-solving skills, scientific knowledge and engineering practices. Laboratory investigations are integrated throughout the course and provide students with opportunities for exploration through scientific inquiry, research, measurement, problem-solving, and experimental procedures.
Learning about civics gives students the skills and knowledge necessary for civic engagement to be active citizens that make a positive impact on their communities. In this course, students discover the rights and responsibilities associated with citizenship in the United States. They learn about the structure of government and its functioning at the local, state, and federal levels. This course examines elections, the lawmaking process, and how citizens can influence public policy. Students also discover ways in which the United States interacts with countries around the world. Geography and economics support students' understanding of civics in this course. Engaging in this study prepares students to be informed citizens who are ready to participate in American democracy.
GRADE 8
Through reading, writing and rhetoric, students in the Middle School Language Arts III course examine how authors fine-tune and use their craft to create purposeful texts. Students continue to develop the reading, writing, language, speaking and listening skills necessary for success in high school, college, career, and beyond. Students evaluate and analyze voice, purpose, diction, syntax, and rhetoric in historical speeches, informational texts, and both classic and contemporary literature using guided readings, interactive practice, and formal assessments. They also refine their narrative, informational and argumentative writing skills through repeated practice in planning, drafting, revising, and editing their writing.
Pre-Algebra emphasize the following areas: representing numbers in scientific notation and extending the set of numbers to the system of real numbers which includes irrational numbers; generating equivalent numeric and algebraic expressions, including the use of the Laws of Exponents; creating and reasoning about linear relationships by modeling an association in bivariate data using a linear equation; solving linear equations, inequalities and systems of linear equations; developing an understanding of the concept of a function; and analyzing two-dimensional figures, particularly triangles, using distance and angle measurements, and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
Prepare for high school science courses with this introduction to new topics and review of basic science concepts. Students learn more about the nature of science, the Earth and space science, properties of matter, changes in matter, the relationship between matter and energy, and energy flow in ecosystems.
Learning about history allows people to see how far we have come and what lies ahead on our journey into the future. In this course, students explore the history of the United States and analyze the cause and effect in historical events. They investigate history by using the tools used by historians to examine the historical, geographic, political, economic, and sociological factors that influenced the development of the United States. Students imagine what it was like to live in the past during that time period by reading the stories of those who experienced it. This course begins with the engaging stories about the reasons that brought the earliest American colonists to the New World and ends with the struggles to rebuild the United States following the Civil War. Engaging in this study allows students to recognize the themes of history that span centuries and leads to a greater appreciation of the development of the United States and the resulting impact on world history.
